Dive sites in Papua New Guinea, near Lae and Madang

Depth: 1-40m (3-131ft) and deeper
Visibility: 5-50m (16-164ft) and more
Accessibility: Shore, Boat, Live-aboard
Time to visit: All year around with warmest water in summer (nov-feb)

Lae and Madang, which are large cities by PNG standards, are not really prepared for divers. Bring your own gear and if possible your own diving boat. If you are one of those adventurous divers and desperate for doing some dives here, try the bigger hotels. They often have some gear and are willing to take the boat out.

Lae and Madang have some excellent shipwrecks from WWII. The water temperatures range from 27 degrees in July up to 29 degrees in January and February. Statistically, the wet season in Lae runs from May to October while Madang has a rainy season from November to May. However, rain doesn't seem to have a big impact on diving conditions as has the wind.
