The Hakkai Maru was a Japanese navy WWII factory vessel. In 1944 she was trying to repair a cruiser when allied planes brought the cruiser down. It returned to Rabaul the same day and was brought down by allied planes just before it got dark. It was a beautiful ship to dive at, but unfortunately this dive site is no more. Volcanic eruptions in 1994 buried the Hakkai Maru.

I'm from Rabaul and now residing in Kalgoorlie,WA Having heard a lot of stories about Simpson harbour as a stretagic naval base for the Japanese during WW II I wonder how many Japanese naval & military personnel parished during the Alied campagne in Rabaul?
