Papua New Guinea is a country that is not very well known by tourists. Getting there is difficult, life is expensive for such a poor country and there are many stories about robberies and the like. We do not say it is the safest country to go to, but we do say that it has some excellent diving which is easily organized if you know the right places. There are excellent live-aboard trips to Milne Bay, Tufi and the Eastern Fields, some even arranged from out of Australia or through their websites. Kimbe Bay is a well established dive resort. Lesser well known resorts near Lae and Madang offer equipment and will take you out, but there might be not enough divers around to get the boat starting. Kavieng and Rabaul are recovering from a huge eruption and it is not very easy to find dive boats here.

Diving is great in Papua New Guinea. It is remote, not many people dive here and it has some of the richest underwater environments in the Pacific. There are many wrecks such as planes, tanks, submarines and ships. Muck diving is very popular in Papua New Guinea, with many interesting species, but there are also many walls, drift dives and caves. The volcanic black sand makes many dives beautiful for macro photographers. The climate is good and diving is possible year around but pay attention to the rainy season, which is not the same in each region. Check therefore which place you go to and when. Water temperatures can be called warm with temperatures between 24 and 30 degrees. It is a great country for diving, not for the faint hearted, but great in each aspect!
